A personalised onboarding journey that helps students writing a thesis find the right resources faster, built in 7 hours at the Lovable customer onboarding hackathon.

01Summary

7 hours, 2 teammates, 1 outcome. Finding the right resources for academic research can be challenging and time consuming, especially for neurodivergent students. With Perlego's new onboarding journey we put users at the centre and focus on getting them the right information quicker than ever before.

02Problem & Context

The brief

Rethink the journey from a user's first discovery of the product, through account creation and payment, to their first meaningful experience inside Perlego. The existing dashboard and e-reader stayed as they were, and the journey leading into them was open to redesign.

Problem

Out of the available tracks, we thought students writing a thesis was the most interesting problem to tackle over time.

Business value

Creating custom user journeys could become a USP for Perlego in a competitive yet generic book rental landscape.

03Approach

With help from Built for Mars, we quickly put together a set of valuable insights, with one in particular shaping the final problem definition and outcome.

“Users are 70% more likely to use your service if they put effort into their account set up.”

Research insight

We thought it was a brilliant insight for two important reasons: it was beneficial to our concept, and it also let us go more in depth on our audience, to truly understand how to tailor their outcomes.

04Key Decisions & Tradeoffs

  • Focus on one persona, replicate later
  • Start onboarding from the first prompt
  • Explore both psychological or behavioural and practical user patterns
  • Improve clarity with core component improvements
